Monocle

I started buying Monocle magazine two months ago, after reading one issue from a colleague, mostly because it is a magazine focusing on different perspectives and issues from all around the world, but also because you really feel that you buy a high quality magazine from the paper, structure, photographs and illustrations. This article from cityofsound describes what/how they did to reach the same quality level on the online version. Its a long one but it really worth the time.

With that, I thought I’d pause to reflect on some of the design and strategy choices I made with Monocle.com and share them here. I’ve often tried to be ‘transparent’ about the work done on projects here, in the hope that it stimulates useful thought or conversation in other projects elsewhere, and partly to facilitate my own reflections on work. None of what follows is rocket science, and it’s not the place to look for thoughts on 2.0/3.0, social software, or urban informatics. That would be in the accounts of different projects. But if you’re interested in the honest craft of website work, almost deliberately old-fashioned ‘classical’ web design – and how to ally this with innovation in magazine publishing – the following should provide a decent account of several of the key decisions in this particular project.”

AntiRSI

For long time I used Workrave to control my work pauses to prevent Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). When I started using Mac I needed an alternative because Workrave just has versions for Linux and Windows. I found AntiRSI. I have been using this application coded by Onne Gorter, a 25yo dutch living in Helsinki, for some months by now, even though is not as good as Workrave it has the basic functionality (pauses and micro pauses) and I have been quite happy with its simplicity. I recommend it, if you know any other application for the same purpose which works in Mac tell me.

“AntiRSI is a program for Mac OS X that helps prevent RSI (repetitive strain injury) and other computer related stress. It does so by forcing you to take regular breaks, yet without getting in the way. It also detects natural breaks so it won’t force too many breaks on you.”

Why? live

Some time ago I got the last album of Why?, Alopecia, it is a very interesting and consistent. They present a unique mix of hip-hop and indie-rock which at the first listening I found intriguing because it really keeps strong elements from both genres.

It was interesting to see two sets of drums, one played by the singer, the instruments going around all the band members, but above all to notice that their unique hip-hop/indie-rock fusion works even better live where you can see from where all the small sounds come from. Big plus for the versatility of the singer and power of the drums. Nice to watch live especially in a small place like Kuudes Linja where the band members were seated in a sofa selling t-shirts and albums. First time in this place for a concert, looking forward to come back for more, there was Atlas Sound today but my body demands some rest! Waiting for Broken Social Scene now, 26.05.

Last year I went from my hometown, Castelo Branco, to Porto by bike through beautiful landscapes in forgotten paths in the mountains. In the end there was 350Km and lot of good moments to remember. Thanks one friend that shared the trip, Henrique, there videos and a big amount of pictures! This is one of the videos that will live with me together with the memories! Deep thanks to Nelson and Henrique! Bem-hajam! 🙂
